Position Type: Full Time / Exempt

Position Overview

The Executive Director is a visionary and mission-oriented leader charged with advancing Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana and its ReStore in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, and policies as established by the Board of Directors. This position drives strategic initiatives, ensures organizational sustainability, and cultivates robust community partnerships to further affordable housing solutions. The Executive Director serves as a non-voting member of the Board and collaborates effectively with staff, volunteers, donors, community partners, and committees to achieve the affiliate’s objectives.


Strategic Leadership, Vision, and Strategy

  • Provide strategic direction aligned with the organization's mission and values in partnership with the Board.
  • Guide the affiliate in growth, innovation, and long-term sustainability via comprehensive planning and organizational development.
  • Translate strategic objectives into actionable operational priorities.
  • Promote a collaborative and inclusive culture that emphasizes respect, accountability, and shared purpose.

Board Engagement

  • Partner with the Board President to develop meeting agendas and provide comprehensive activity reports.
  • Support board committees with resources, guidance, and communication.
  • Collaborate on strategic planning, policy development, and land acquisition strategies.

Financial Management and Sustainability

  • Prepare and oversee the annual budget for review by the Finance Committee and approval by the Board.
  • Manage resources with integrity, ensuring fiscal accountability and transparency.
  • Coordinate closely with the Accountant, Treasurer, and Finance Committee to monitor financial performance and compliance.
  • Oversee fundraising and development strategies to sustain and expand charitable giving, earned revenue, grants, and donor engagement.

Development, Public Relations & Community Engagement

  • Lead the design and implementation of annual fundraising plans.
  • Foster relationships with donors, community leaders, and partner organizations.
  • Represent the affiliate at public events, civic meetings, and housing advocacy initiatives.
  • Ensure visibility and awareness of affordable housing needs within the community.
  • Advocate for affordable housing and Habitat’s mission locally, regionally, and statewide.
  • Establish partnerships with nonprofits, civic groups, faith-based organizations, and government entities.

Construction Oversight

  • Work collaboratively with the Construction Manager on project planning, scheduling, and budgeting.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Administration and Operations

  • Provide executive oversight and strategic direction across all operational areas of the Affiliate and ReStores.
  • Partner with the ReStore Manager to ensure operations meet financial and programmatic goals.
  • Partner with the Construction Manager to ensure timely, on-scope , and cost-effective completion of homes.
  • Maintain timely and transparent reporting to the Board of Directors, HFHI, funders, and regulatory bodies.
  • Serve as the principal liaison between our affiliate, Habitat for Humanity International, and Habitat for Humanity Indiana.
  • Lead long-term strategic planning initiatives and assist with Board recruitment and training.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Experience: 5–10 years of progressive leadership in nonprofit management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial oversight, fundraising, strategic planning and building community partnerships.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Knowledge of affordable housing, construction management, and real estate development preferred.

Position Details

  • Classification: Full-time, Exempt
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends
  • Travel: Approximately 30%
  • Compensation: $85,000 – $105,000, commensurate with experience and education
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Paid Time Off
